Filmtech Individual Class Schedule - Spring 2012
DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING Take your documentary project from idea to final edit. The Documentary Filmmaking program consists of two parts, each focusing on a unique aspect of the documentary form. Taken together, the classes provide in-depth study and practice in documentary techniques, production, shooting, editing and post-production. Basic knowledge of video camera operation and Final Cut Pro editing software is required for the program. DOCUMENTARY PART 1 - AN OVERVIEW OF THE FORM (DOC 1) An introduction to documentary history, aesthetics and ethics as well as the basics of digital non-fiction production. The class will explore some of the fundamental techniques used to tell non-fiction stories for the screen as students formulate and begin researching their short individual project. DOCUMENTARY PART 2 - PRODUCTION (DOC 2)
A deeper exploration of the process of working from concept to completed production of a short documentary project. Students acquire hands-on experience producing, directing, shooting, editing and sound recording and design. Pre-requisite: Documentary Part 1 or instructor permission. PRODUCING
This intensive class teaches all you need to know to turn that great idea into a film or video project - whether it's a short or feature. You'll learn everything from property acquisition and development to budgeting and financing, script breakdown and scheduling. CINEMATOGRAPHY Students gain practical knowledge and a grounding in light and camera theory, including use of a 35mm film camera in Cinematography 2. Completion of Cinematography 1 is a prerequisite for enrollment in Cinematography 2. SCREENWRITING All you need to know to get those great stories and characters of yours out of your head and onto the page in a structure tailored for the screen. Learn story structure, character and plot development as you take your dramatic idea from outline to polished finished script in a workshop environment.
SCREENWRITING 1 (SCR1) Students are introduced to the basics of screenwriting structure with reading and discussion of full-length scripts. Students will begin to develop ideas for their own screenplays by studying how characters are created, themes are developed and stories are structured. Incorporating the elements of dialogue, story and structure, students turn their ideas into the beginning pages of a draft script. Prerequisite for Screenwriting 2. Required texts: How to Write a Movie in 21 Days by Vicki King, Story by Robert McKee. Instructor: David Greenberg. 8 Sessions

SCREENWRITING 2 (SCR2) Students finish a rough draft of their script while gaining further practice in the unique process of writing for the screen and building on the foundations learned in Screenwriting 1: character, dialogue, scene, story and structure. EDITING (ED) This class teaches the basic components of editing using Final Cut Pro, including logging and capturing footage and how to use the timeline. Add polish and effective pacing to your project as you learn how to use such effects as dissolves, fades and wipes. Improve the look/feel of your work by learning how to incorporate music and other audio effects, titles and graphics. Instructor: Bob Larkin. 8 Sessions Tuesdays, 7-10 PM.

VIDEOGRAPHY (VID) If you want to learn the basics of camera operation and filmmaking but do not have a lot of time, this class gets you in and out with a DVD in your hand in one weekend. The class works together as a crew to conceive, plan and complete a short digital video project while gaining a basic understanding of production elements such as camera operation, location sound recording, lighting, design elements, directing actors and editing. DIRECTING ACTORS (DA) Perfect for filmmakers of all levels who want to hone the process of working with actors and sharpen their directing skills. Students work with each other to workshop scenes as they explore how directors interact with writers and actors to realize their creative vision of the screenplay. The course includes practice conceptualizing a character, auditioning and casting, running rehearsals and working with actors on the set. Through class work and out-of-class assignments, students will develop the concept of a character from the screenplay, formulate an idea of what physical and emotional qualities you want to see in an actor as it pertains to the casting and audition process, practice how to identify the psychological and emotional motivation of a character and learn techniques on how to elicit the relevant dramatic response from an actor on the set. PRODUCTION ASSISTING (PA) This course teaches you the hierarchy and protocol on a set and what will be expected of you as a production assistant. A P.A. may be called on to perform a number of tasks, working with the director and production crew to ensure the production runs smoothly and the set is run effectively. GENERAL POLICY
All students must be 18 years of age by the date of the first class, except for those courses specifically offered for younger students. Waivers to this policy may be made at the discretion of Filmtech. Attendance of all class sessions is critical to getting the full educational value out of a class. For this reason, a Certificate of Completion will be awarded only to students who attend at least 70% of class hours. All works created by Filmtech students in conjunction with a Filmtech course are the property of the student. However, Filmtech reserves the right to use portions of the work for marketing and promotional purposes.
TUITION REFUNDS AND CANCELLATIONS No tuition will be refunded once a class has started. Filmtech reserves the right to cancel any class before it starts due to insufficient enrollment, in which case tuition will be fully refunded.
